<p>It’s only fitting that Caitlin Covington and her husband, Chris, first connected with Chicago-area designer Kate Marker on Instagram. The <i><a href="https://www.southerncurlsandpearls.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Southern Curls &amp; Pearls</a></i> blogger has 1.3 million followers on the platform, where she posts about her travels, her family—and the French-inspired four-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath oasis in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, that was three years in the making.</p>
<p>We talked to Kate, principal designer and owner of <a href="https://www.katemarkerinteriors.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kate Marker Interiors</a>, about how she blended modern touches with the lived-in charm of a European countryside estate.</p>
<h2>A Marble-Clad Primary Bathroom</h2>
<p>From the start, Caitlin knew she wanted marble throughout the home. “We loved the warmth of the <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/stone/collections/calacatta-crema.html" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ann Sacks Calacatta Crema</a> compared to Carrara marble, which often leans cooler and greyer,” says Kate, whose used the Crema on the shower walls and bathroom floor. “It felt like the perfect material to ground the room. For the shower floor, we introduced a touch of pattern with the <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/stone/collections/calacatta-borghini.html" target="_self" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ann Sacks Calacatta Borghini Herringbone</a>, which complemented the main floor tile seamlessly.”</p>


<h2>A Timeless Kids' Bathroom with Natural Stone</h2>
<p>“In both girls’ bathrooms, we wanted the tile selections to feel timeless but playful,” says Kate. For Caitlin’s younger daughter, Collins, Kate opted for <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/stone/collections/stone-penny-rounds.html" target="_self">Stone Penny Rounds in Carrara</a> on the floor and <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/ceramic/collections/canyon-lake-by-studio-mcgee.html" target="_self">Canyon Lake by Studio McGee in Antique White Matte</a> on the walls. “One subtle but standout detail in this space was the wainscoting: We used rectangular tile but switched to a square shape for the lower two rows to create a border around the room and add a layer of interest,” she says.</p>


<h2>A French Inspired Bathroom Designed to Grow</h2>
<p>For Kennedy, the older of Caitlin’s two young daughters, Kate designed a whimsical French-blue bathroom. “We definitely had fun with the selections in this space. But for the elements that feel more permanent, like the tile, we chose materials that can easily grow with her,” she says. Kate layered <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/ceramic/collections/made-shapes.html">MADE Shapes Scallop in Dogbone Matte</a> on the shower walls—a nod to the scalloped vanity—with <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/terracotta/collections/idris-by-ait-manos.html">Idris by Ait Manos in White Carrare wainscoting</a> and <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/ceramic/collections/savoy.html">Savoy Hive in Ricepaper</a> on the floors.</p>


<h2>A Stylish Utility Room with Artisan Tile</h2>
<p><a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/stone/collections/sable-clair.html" target="_self">Textured limestone Sable Clair</a> on the floor stands up to heavy foot traffic in this back-entry space off the garage, while the hand-glazed Moroccan <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/terracotta/collections/idris-by-ait-manos.html" target="_self">Idris by Ait Manos backsplash tiles</a> back to other scalloped details throughout the home. “Since we played it fairly safe with the cabinet color and design in this space, the patterned backsplash was a fun way to bring in some interest,” says Kate. “This was an addition after the final installation—and it was one that we were all very pleased with.”</p>


<h2>A Guest Bathroom with Character</h2>
<p>The <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/ceramic/collections/savoy.html">Savoy Large Stack in Lantern</a> on the shower walls was one of the few “more traditionally masculine” design choices Kate made in the home. “Since this bathroom wasn’t designed for anyone in particular, it gave us the freedom to play and experiment with the design in a different way. The idea was that it could easily grow with whoever might use it in the future. For now, it’s a guest room, but there are hopes that it would one day be a baby boy's room!” says Kate. She also used <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/stone/collections/pala.html">Pala Hex in Carrara</a> for the shower floors, carrying it through to the main floor in order to create a sense of continuity in the small space.</p>
