<h1>Cara Woodhouse Takes Us Inside Noyack Cottage</h1>


<p>Cara is the founder and creative director of <a href="https://www.carawoodhouse.com/p-r-o-j-e-c-t-s" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Cara Woodhouse Interiors</a>. Her recently published book, <a href="https://www.carawoodhouse.com/b-o-o-k" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><i>It's a Mood</i></a>, tells you everything you need to know about how she approaches a room. The layered interior design, the textures, and the balance between new and old are how she puts that theory into practice.</p>
<p>At Noyack, that philosophy plays out in every room. &quot;Tile and stone were foundational to the identity of the interiors,&quot; she says. &quot;I think surfaces have the ability to completely shape the emotional tone of a space.&quot; Throughout the cottage, the material choices create rhythm: graphic and bold in some rooms, quieter and more neutral in others.</p>


<p>When she first set foot in Noyack Cottage, a 1928 shingle-style house tucked into the Hamptons town of <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/sag-harbor-travel-guide" target="_blank">Sag Harbor</a>, Cara Woodhouse found much more than a nearly 100-year-old home in need of restoration.</p>
<p>Surrounded by hydrangeas, salt-weathered bayberry, and a particular kind of seaside quiet, Woodhouse knew she needed to let the space speak for itself.</p>
<p>&quot;It had this relaxed beach house energy that immediately felt nostalgic and full of possibility,&quot; she says. The location, in one of the quietest corners of Long Island, shaped everything that came after. The quality of the natural light, the slower rhythm of the town, and an awareness that this house had already experienced life well before she arrived. Her job was to better understand the energy of the space, not over-design it.</p>
<p>The word she kept coming back to, in the early ideation phase of the project, was escapism. Like being drawn toward something rather than running away from it, she envisioned a home that drew you in from the outside and held you there. &quot;I wanted it to feel emotional, immersive, and lived in,&quot; she says, &quot;with this cool tension between coastal ease and bold sculptural design.&quot;</p>


<p>&quot;The way materials transition from room to room was something I thought about constantly,&quot; she says. &quot;Even small shifts in texture, finish, or scale were intentional.&quot; This also comes to life in the guest bedroom work nook, where a <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/slabs/lilac-2-cm-slab-as19963-2cm.html?skuId=AS19963-2CM-LEATHERED&amp;finish=Leathered" target="_self">Lilac slab</a> turns a potentially drab workspace into one of the most quietly memorable.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Woodhouse was in Milan for <a href="https://www.salonemilano.it/en" target="_blank">Salone del Mobile</a>, absorbing the kind of immersive, material-rich environments that European designers have been making for decades. It confirmed one of the foundational beliefs of her practice. &quot;I think interiors should evoke emotion in the same way a film or piece of art does,&quot; she says.</p>
<p>In the case of Noyack Cottage, she's certainly accomplished just that.</p>

<p>That sensibility is what makes Noyack feel less like a portfolio project and more like a lived-in cottage, filled with comfortable furniture and beloved materials that were accumulated with intention. &quot;I love when spaces feel collected over time instead of overly designed in one moment,&quot; she says. And you can feel it in the warm blush tones of the primary bath, where <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/slabs/rosa-cotone-2-cm-slab-as20311-2cm.html?skuId=AS20311-2CM-HONED" target="_self">Rosa Cotone slabs</a> and <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/tile/alyssa-12-x-24-field-tile-as17593-field-12x24.html?skuId=AS17593-001&amp;finish=Honed" target="_self">Alyssa marble</a> seemingly emulate stepping onto a warm, sandy beach like the one down the road. The <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/slabs/arabescato-corchia-2-cm-slab-as19439-2cm.html?skuId=AS19439-2CM-HONED&amp;finish=Honed" target="_self">Arabescato Corchia</a> running the kitchen counters and backsplash feels like something out of a gallery, its abstract white and cream shapes moving across a field of silver and charcoal from one surface to the next.</p>


<p>One of the most defining moments in the house is the bathroom, anchored by an eye-catching <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/slabs/terrazzo-renata-black-3-cm-slab-as19481-3cm-black.html?skuId=AS19481-3CM-BLACK-BRUSHED&amp;finish=Brushed" target="_self">black and white terrazzo stone slab</a>. It's a high-drama room that makes you feel something the second you walk in. The vanity and floor have a kind of boldness that catches your breath, but also feels grounded and calming amongst the <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/mini-slabs/carrara-sp-30-x-72-mini-slab-as14783-slab-30x72.html?skuId=AS14783-01&amp;finish=Honed" target="_self">Carrara marble</a> wrapping the walls and shower.</p>
<p>For Woodhouse, tension is one of the most important tools in a room. A space needs contrast to feel alive, but restraint to feel balanced, and she's just as intentional about knowing when to pull back. Take the pool bathroom, for example, the one people track wet footprints through after a long afternoon outside. She anchored it in a <a href="/content/annsacks/us/en/p/mini-slabs/nubo-verde-30-x-72-mini-slab-as20070-00800-14480-48930.html?skuId=AS20070-006&amp;finish=Honed" target="_self">Nubo Verde slab</a>, a stone full of exciting movement that looks carefully pulled from the earth rather than chosen from a sample book. It's an unexpected choice for the most casual room in the house, and that contrast is what makes it work.</p>


<p>What's interesting about Woodhouse is that she doesn't really turn it off. Inspiration doesn't live in showrooms or mood boards for her. She’s motivated by the way a restaurant feels at 7 pm when the light changes, a shadow moving across a wall, or a piece of music that transports you. &quot;Some of my best ideas actually come when I'm not actively trying to design something,&quot; she says.</p>
