Behind the Design

"My clients inspire the style and concept for each and every project.  I aim to not have one look or style that runs throughout my portfolio, as it is more interesting to keep trying out new styles and techniques.  I truly design for my clients and their needs and aspirations, not my own."

What are ways to create a focal wall in a kitchen?

For a focal wall, it can be a few things— maybe it is new, larger windows that are going into the space, and how to work the kitchen elements around them. Or maybe it is a hood they want to feature and then the elements around it fall into place. Honestly I have no rules, it is so dependent upon the existing conditions, the existing constraints, and the client budget. I just always work to have the right amount of contrast with the right decorative lighting. I agonize over the right light fixtures longer than anything else!

What are the must-have features within the kitchens you design?

I don’t know if anything is a must have, but I try to create something a little different than what you see everywhere else! I always start with what the most ideal layout would be to maximize storage, and then from there build the materials based upon things the client has gotten thrilled about.

Usually the counter is the last selection, and I have the client shop for stone slabs with me, and every time, no matter what, they always know which one is the one for them. And it never ends up being what they thought they would pick! Clients always have strong opinions on metals they like and dislike and light fixtures they like and dislike.

What are some ways to play with tile within a room?

Lately I am on a kick of eliminating the shower curb, and having the floor continue into the shower space. I also like to play with tile direction and orientation depending upon the actual tile selection. As for grout, I love the Bostik grout with the sparkle element and its ability to maintain consistent color throughout. I like the grout lines as small as possible.

How can you incorporate trends while still maintaining timeless design?

As we evolve in the world of instant notifications and instant posts of what's happening around the entire world, I don't feel as though anything can be truly timeless for all eternity. Trends are moving at a faster rate with the speed of information, making things come in and out even faster. What I tell my clients is to move ahead with something you truly love and you think you will love for years to come. Once I know what things the client likes and dislikes, I work around that to find what excites them.

What’s the best advice you’ve received as a designer?

It's not personal, it's business. You cannot take things personally in the design industry, otherwise you will spend more time sad and discouraged than inspired and enthralled.
